Patiently Wait for your Enemy to Present an Opening – Bohdi Sanders

Warrior with a sword - Bohdi Sanders

The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. Sun Tzu

The first rule of self-defense is to make sure that you are safe. Train, prepare, and develop a sound strategy to make sure that you and your family are as safe as possible. Only then should you look for an opportunity to defeat your enemy.

This might sounds strange to some, after all, if you are training for self-defense, aren’t your training to defeat your enemy? Well, the answer is yes and no. If you are training for self-defense, you are training first to keep yourself safe. Of course, in the process of training to defend yourself from a physical assault, you are training to strike back, not just to block and move.

But Sun Tzu is talking more about an army, which in your case would be a long-term enemy or adversary who wants to harm you, take your job, destroy your reputation, etc. When dealing with one of these enemies, you first want to make sure that they have no way to harm you, that your defenses, your reputation, and your character are solid.

After you have made sure you are well protected, then it is time to strategize and patiently wait for an opportunity to defeat your enemy. If you are patient and ready to take advantage of a mistake or opening, sooner or later your enemy will present you with the opportunity to take him down. Then you must strike fast and pull the rug right out from under him. Crush him without him ever knowing it was coming! Warrior up!
